Gloversville to play for Class A title

JOHNSTOWN — Gloversville won all five singles matches on its way to a 5-2 victory over Scotia-Glenville in a Section II Class A boys tennis semifinal match at Knox Field on Tuesday.

The victory earned the second-seeded Huskies their first trip to the Class A title match.

“It’s a proud moment for the school and the program,” Gloversville coach Michael Bruce said. “My team will battle to the finish. They want this Section II title badly.”

Damian Bruce, Brian Hugo, Nicholas Bruce, Kyle Fonda and Cam Biche all won singles matches for Gloversville.

Damian Bruce posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Laif Lundstrom at first singles, while Hugo notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Brendon McCarthy at second singles.

Nicholas Bruce recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Wyatt Borwick, Kyle Fonda won 6-2, 6-2 over Jacob McKenzie and Biche prevailed 6-2, 6-2 over Ethan McKone.

Jared O’Connor and Joseph Rumfelt won at first doubles for Scotia-Glenville (13-2 overall), while Keith Ogden and Lucas Kownack won at second doubles.

The third-seeded Tartans topped sixth-seeded Mohonasen, 5-2, in the quarterfinal round Monday.

Gloversville and Scotia-Glenville had split their two matches during the regular season. The Tartans posted a 4-3 home victory in the season opener April 10, while Gloversville won at home, 6-1, on May 3. The loss to Scotia-Glenville was the only defeat of the regular season for Gloversville, which has won 14 straight matches.

Gloversville (14-1 overall) will face top-seeded Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake for the title today at Ballston Spa High School at 4 p.m.

The Spartans posted a 6-1 victory over fifth-seeded Averill Park in their semifinal match.
