Dolgeville’s Barnes, George honored

SYRACUSE — Section III honored the area’s top scholar-athletes June 12 at an awards dinner at SRC Arena on the Onondaga Community College campus.

Dolgeville’s Sarah George and Hunter Barnes were among the honorees. George played girls soccer, girls basketball, and girls track and field, while Barnes was a member of the football, boys indoor track and field, and baseball teams.

The best male and female scholar-athletes from each of the 105 schools within Section III are honored at this event. This year the program, sponsored by Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of New York, is awarding more than $20,000 in college scholarships.

Each Section III high school may nominate one male and one female candidate.

To be eligible, the varsity athletes must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 90 percent or better.

A total 26 of the 168 honorees are ranked No. 1 in their class, and 138 are ranked 10th or higher in the respective class.
