LITTLE FALLS —The Amsterdam Mohawks swept a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader from the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Park.
Amsterdam (8-6) rallied to win the opening game 4-3 and came back to shut out the DiamondDawgs (8-6) 4-0 in the nightcap.
The Mohawks got off to a fast start in the first game putting a pair of runs on the board in the top of the first.
Jake Mueller reached base on a walk and scored on T.J. Collett’s home run.
The DiamondDawgs pulled even in the bottom of the inning.
Bronson Grubbs led off the inning with a walk and scored on Austin Pollack’s double. Pollack came around to tie the game at two apiece on Clay Koniencki’s single.
Mohawk Valley took the lead in the bottom of the second when Tim Zeng singled and scored on a Mohawks fielding error for a 3-2 lead.
Amsterdam came back to tie the game in the top of the fourth when Liam Wilson was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on Eric Rivera’s double and crossed the plate on Dylan Reynolds’ single.
The Mohawks picked up the game-winner in the top of the fifth when Julian Gallup and Jake Mueller were hit by pitches to put runners on first and second with one out.
Gallup advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Wilson’s sacrifice fly to center for the 4-3 victory.
Amsterdam’s Mathieu Gauthier and Mohawk Valley’s Crandall Poore locked in a pitchers’ duel through the four innings of play before the Mohawks broke through in the top of the fifth.
Will Holland opened the inning with a ground-rule double and Chris Hamilton reached on an error to put runners on second and third. Gallup pinch ran for Hamilton and came around to score with Holland on John Valente’s double. Valente put the score at 3-0 when he crossed the pate on Collett’s single.
Amsterdam added another run in the top of the sixth when Rivera doubled and scored on a ground-out by Gallup and lock up the 4-0 victory.
