JOHNSTOWN — After winning the first all three legs of the 5K Triple Crown on May 6, May 20 and Amsterdam’s Cody Russell was crowned the overall winner.
Cody Russell finished with a three-race total time of 55:58 to earn the overall title.
Amsterdam’s Cory Russell was second with a total time of 57:48, while Gloversville’s Ron Green (59:17) was third. Johnstown’s Jeff Klingbeil (1:00.15) was fourth and Loudonville’s Jian Shen (1:03.31) was fifth.
Fort Plain’s Stacy Merchant was the top female finisher, placing eighth overall with a total time of 1:09.18. Johnstown’s Katie Romano (1:14.43) was second among female finishers and 12th overall, while Dolgeville’s Kaitlyn Lyons (1:15.10) was third among female finishers and 13th overall.
Cody Russell completed his three-race sweep June 10 in the Lexington Run. Russell finished the 3.1-mile course in a time of 18:26.
He also was the top overall finisher in the Glove Cities Rotary’s Run for the Roses 5K on May 6 with a time of 19:10 and he won the Mountain Valley Hospice 5K on May 20 with a time of 18:22.
The Lexington Run was the third and final race in the 5K Triple Crown presented by St. Mary’s Healthcare.
The first race took place May 6 with the Run for the Roses 5K in Johnstown and the second took place May 20 the Mountain Valley Hospice 5K at Fulton-Montgomery Community College.
Johnstown’s Christopher Murphy (1:12.09) was first in the boys age 15-and-younger division, while Romano (1:14.43) was first in the girls age 15-and-younger division.
Cody Russell topped the men’s age 20-to-29 division with his total time of 55:58. Cory Russell (57:48) was second and Fonda’s Aidan Simonds (1:07.16) was third.
In the women’s age 20-to-29 division, Lyons (1:15.10) was first, St. Johnsville’s Kristen Lansburg (1:15.12) was second and Sprakers’ Jennifer Hulbert (1:35.44) was third.
Klingbeil (1:00.15) was the top finisher in the men’s 30-to-39 age group, while Johnstown’s John Valovic (1:11.51) was second.
In the women’s 30-to-39 age group, Merchant was the top finisher with a total time of 1:09.18.
Gloversville’s Jessica Brosat (1:18.14) was second and Gloversville’s Rene Dutcher (1:18.39) was third.
Shen (1:03.31) was first in the men’s age 40-to-49 division, Gloversville’s Jamie Spraker (1:04.47) was second and Gloversville’s Milo Gifford Jr. (1:12.15) was third.
In the women’s age 40-to-49 division, Fonda’s Teresa Nare (1:22.43) was first, Gloversville’s Rebecca Danelorich (1:27.17) was second and Hagaman’s Jackie Nulty (2:21.00) was third.
Ron Green (59:17) was the top finisher in the men’s age 50-to-59 division, while Fort Plain’s Mike Kwiatkowski (1:44.14) was second.
In the women’s 60-to-69 age group, Fort Plain’s Diana Schwartz (1:25.13) was first, Amsterdam’s Kelli McCoski (1:26.30) was second and Johnstown’s Carm Anagnostopulos (1:30.12) was third.
Gloversville’s Charles Hagelgans (men’s age 60-to-69, 1:39.38), Johnstown’s Robert Fairman (men’s age 70-and-older, 1:30.58) and Johnstown’s Marilyn Fairman (women’s age 70-and-older, 1:49.10) also topped their respective age groups.
A total of 34 competitors completed all three races in the Triple Crown.
The Triple Crown consisted of three 5K races held on three different days resulting in one male and female grand champion. There were cash prizes and medals awarded and other prize drawings for those who enter the 5K Triple Crown.
Three local groups joined forces to raise money, promote their causes and increase tourism in Fulton County.
All Triple Crown entries were automatically entered to win great prizes, including gift certificates, running gear, clothing and more.
Runners received a free shirt and goody bag for each race.
Cash prizes were awarded to Triple Crown winners (male/female) in the following age groups: 20-39; 40-59; 60-and-older. The first prize was $100, second prize will be $75 and third prize will be $50. Medals also were awarded in the following age categories: 15-and-younger; 16-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69; 70-and-older.
