Royal draws 261 riders for motocross event

CAROGA LAKE — Johnstown’s Maxx Miller and Michael Ward picked up victories on the second day of the STR/Monster Energy Drink sponsored Central New York Motocross Riders Association competition that drew 261 riders Sunday at Royal Mountain Ski Center.

Miller posted top honors in the 51cc Pee Wee Sr division for 7-and-eight year olds, while Ward topped the podium in the Plus 40 Expert division and was second in the Plus 45 Expert class.

Several local riders also posted runner-up finishes in he competition.

Johnstown’s Casey Battisti was second in the 122-Open Amateur division and fifth in 122-250 Am.

Gloversville’s Evan Darling was second in the 51cc Pee Wee Jr. division, while Fonda’s Skyler Olmstead was runner-up in the Quad Schoolboy competition.

Broadalbin’s Fred Hansen placed second in the Quad Am division and Gloversville’s Dennis Fitzpartick was second in the Plus 50 class.

Fonda’s Carter Petersen turned in a pair of third-place finishes in the 122-125 2-stroke and Open Mini 10-16 divisions, while Johnstown’s Bennett Melita was third in the 59-65 10-11 2-stroke class and fifth in Junior Mini 59-85cc 2-stroke competition.

Johnstown’s Hayden Zelich finished third in the 78-85cc 12-15 2-stroke division, while Fonda’s Charles Rose was fifth in the class.

Gloversville’s Ryan Whitehouse finished fourth in the 122-125 2-stroke class while Johnstown’s Brandon Handy finished fourth in the Schoolboy 856-250cc 12-16 year old competition and Amsterdam’s Mark Cuomo finished fifth in the Plus 30 Novice class.

Racing returns to Royal Mountain Wednesday with the STR/Monster Energy Drink Supercross under the lights.

Royal will host its annual hillclimb event on July 16 and CNYMRA motocross will return on July 30 and Aug. 20.
