FFCS Athletic Hall of Fame names 2017 inductees

FONDA — The Fonda-Fultonville Central School Hall of Fame Selection Committee recently announced the members of the Class of 2017.

It is a distinguished class with many outstanding accomplishments. Inductees will be honored at halftime of the homecoming football game against Holy Trinity on Oct. 14. They are as follows;

John (Matt) Sullivan — Class of 1978

Sullivan was a multi-sport athlete in the mid-1970s, earning 10 varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball and outdoor track. As a high school football player, Sullivan was a member of two Tri-Valley championship teams, a two time all-league selection, as well as being voted team captain and MVP in his senior season. He graduated as the leading receiver in FFCS football history.

As a baseball player, Matt was a two-time all-league selection and a starter on the 1977 Class C Section II title squad. On the basketball court Matt earned three varsity letters and was a top scorer his senior season.

Sullivan switched to outdoor track in the spring of his senior year and was a sprinter on the Tri-Valley title team, winning the league meet in both the 100 and 400 relay.

After graduation, Sullivan enrolled at Alfred University where he earned three varsity letters and was selected as an AP Second Team Division III All-American in 1980. That season, he set Saxon records for receptions in a season (58) and yards (806).

Sullivan presently resides in Fonda and is the managing director of Kasson and Keller Corporation. He is also a long time member of the FFCS BOE, currently serving as president.

Shane Smith — Class of 2010

In the spring of 2010, Shane Smith capped off his high school track career with a state title in the discus. A thrower in both indoor and outdoor track, Smith’s forte was in the discus and he did not disappoint, claiming first place in the NYSPHSAA championships.

During his record-setting senior season, Shane achieved and all-time school and personal best of 192 feet. During that season he competed in and won both discus and shot put in several invitationals.

Not limited to track, Smith also earned two varsity letters in football.

After high school, Smith enrolled at the University of Buffalo where he competed in both indoor and outdoor track earning a bachelor’s degree in 2014.

2010 Boys Cross-Country Team

The 2010 FFCS Boys Cross-Country Team was part of a group of runners who won four straight division titles, league championships, Class C Sectional titles and earned four straight trips to the NYSPHSAA meets.

This culminated with a state title in 2010, which was a season to remember. That year the team, using the theme “One team, One time” rolled through the season.

The squad won the WAC title, all of its invitational meets, the Section II Class C title and finally, the NYSPHSAA meet.

The team, coached by Mark Therrien and Mike Benton, represented FFCS at the highest level of competition, a feat worthy of Hall of Fame recognition. Team members include Kyle Geniti, Zak Godfrey    Mike Guiffre, Cody Russell, Cody Shave, Mike Scott, Tyler Angioli, Matt Hoffman, Omijah Piening and James Westman.
