


WAYNE — Mayfield’s Madison Relyea, Johnstown’s Julia Sarullo and Amsterdam’s Olivia Lazarou all turned in top 10 finishes at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association cross-country championship meet Saturday at Wayne Central High School.
Relyea, a freshman, led the trio with a seventh place finish in the Class D race, touring the 5K course in a time of 20:40.7. Sarullo, a senior, hit the chute in 21:15.6 for a 10th place finish in the Class C race.
Lazarou, a senior, turned in a time of 20:52.2 to place 10th in the Class B race.
With her seventh-place finish, Relyea earned a spot to compete in the New York State Federation Championships on Nov. 18th at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls along with Ballston Spa’s Faith DeMars and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s Rory Graham.
Picking up overall girls championships at the meet were Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland (Class A) in 17:51.4; Katherine Lee of Shoreham Wading River (Class B) in 20:07.9; Hayleigh Palotti of Livonia (Class C) in 19:24.6 and Brooke Rauber (Class D) of Tully in 18:51.6.
Fayetteville-Manlius of Section III won the Class A girls title with 24 points, while Section IIs Shenendehowa was second with 79 points. The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls placed sixth in the Class B championships with 144 points. John Jay-Cross River of Section I won the Class B title with 57 points. In Class C CBA-Syracuse won the team title with 62 points, while Schuylerville of Section II was eighth with 195 points.
In Class D Section II champion Greenwich was edged by Section III champion South Lewis 62-65 for the state championship.
On the boys side, Section II champion Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake won the Class B team championship with 25 points, well ahead of runner-up Pittsford Mendon of Section V with 91 points.
Niskayuna placed third in the Class A meet with 88 points, while Section IV champion Corning won the title, edging Section IIIs Fayetteville Manlius 38-40.
In the Class C meet, Mount Academy won with 50 points, while Albany Academy placed seventh with 153 points.
Section III’s Beaver River won the Class D team title with 48 points, while Section II champion Maple Hill placed 5th with 119 points.
