JOHNSTOWN — In a match that came down to the final weight class, Canajoharie-Fort Plain eked out a 43-42 victory over Fonda-Johnstown on Thursday.

Canajoharie-Fort Plain claimed wins in eight of 15 weight classes to claim the Western Athletic Conference win at Fonda-Fultonville High School.

“This was a blood pumper,” Canajoharie-Fort Plain coach Bob Van Slyke said. “I’m very pleased with the way we wrestled tonight. It was a good, close match.”

During the course of the match there were 11 lead changes or ties, including six in the final six weight classes as the lead changed hands after each.

“It was an exciting night. That was a great match,” Fonda-Johnstown coach Jim Rodecker said. “It would have been nice to get the win, but it was a fun match either way.”

Fonda-Johnstown got back-to-back forfeit wins from Chris Estep and Kyle Salamack at 132 and 138 pounds, respectively, to open the match with a 12-0 lead.

At 113 pounds, Canajoharie-Fort Plain’s Jared Bentz posted a 4-3 decision over Justin Kearns to put C-FP in front 37-36 with two weight classes remaining.

Fonda-Johnstown’s Marquise Johnson pinned C-FP’s Adam Oertel in 2:28 to give Fo-Jo a 42-37 lead heading into the final bout.

Needing a pin to earn the victory, Lucas Sunderland delivered for Canajoharie-Fort Plain by pinning Fo-Jo’s Jonathan Cranker to make the final score 43-42.

“We want these kind of matches to get ready for sectionals,” Van Slyke said.

It was the final home match for Fonda-Johnstown seniors Johnson, Maxson, Gray, Subik and Chris Hernigle.

“The kids wrestled tough tonight,” Rodecker said. “I’m proud of them. We’re starting to peak for sectionals.”

Both Canajoharie-Fort Plain and Fonda-Johnstown are scheduled to compete in the Schoharie Duals on Saturday.

“We’ll run into them again,” VanSlyke said. “It will be another tough match for sure.”
