ITHACA — Fonda-Johnstown junior Alayna Gray qualified for the finals in both of her events at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Swimming Championships at Ithaca College on Friday.
Gray posted personal-best times in both of her events Friday.
Gray posted a time of 23.39 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle to finish first in Friday’s preliminaries. Oceanside’s Catherine Stanford (23.31 seconds) was second and East Aurora’s Mary Brinker (23.47) was third.
Gray’s time in the 50 freestyle puts her in consideration for high school All-American status.
“Hopefully, Alayna can maintain that first place in the 50-yard freestyle and bring home a state championship tomorrow,” Fonda-Johnstown coach Ken Hoefs said.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Gray posted a time of 51.76 seconds to finish fourth in the preliminaries.
Northport’s Chloe Stepanek posted the top preliminary time of 50.01 seconds. Stanford was second with a time of 50.99 seconds and Our Lady of Lourdes’ Clare Bosse was third with a time of 51.43.
Today’s swim finals are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
