Area athletes earn state-meet spots

CLIFTON PARK — Several area athletes earned state-meet spots Friday on the second and final day of competition at the Section II State Qualifier at Shenendehowa High School.

Johnstown’s Sebastian Mills, Mayfield-Northville’s Madison Relyea, Amsterdam’s Gabby Stanavich and Broadalbin-Perth’s Niko Mancini all qualified for next weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Track and Field Championships at Middletown High School.

Mills, a senior, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in Division II (small-school) with a time of 10:10.15, while Relyea, a sophomore, won the 1,500 meters with a school-record time of 4:45.02. It will be Relyea’s third trip to the states this school year, having also qualified in cross country and nordic skiing.

Stanavich, a senior, won the Division I (large-school) 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.70 seconds. She also won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles Thursday to qualify for states in both events.

Mancini, a senior, won the Division II pentathlon with a total of 3,100 points.

Several other area competitors posted strong showings Friday.

Amsterdam’s Charli Beekman was third in the girls Division I 100-meter dash with a time of 12.69 seconds, while Fort Plain-Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville’s Mekhi Lanier (11.47 seconds) was fourth in the boys Division II 100-meter dash.

Mayfield was third in the girls Division II 4 x 800 relay as the team of Taryn LaFontaine, Delaney LaFontaine, Kira Williams and Relyea posted a school-record time of 10:09.02. Williams also was eighth in the girls Division II 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:27.12.

Johnstown was fourth in the girls Division II 1,600 relay as the team of Jenna Thompson, Talia Anderson, Mollly Lake and Abigail Gottung posted a time of 4:13.44.

Mayfield-Northville’s Samantha Kent was fifth in the Division II discus with a throw of 89-11, while Gloversville’s Macey Salvione (13-11) was ninth in the girls Division I long jump. She also placed ninth in the Division I triple jump with a leap of 32-1/2.

In the girls Division II pole vault, Broadalbin-Perth’s Ava Tyler (10-0) was third, while Mayfield-Northville’s Jordan Miller failed to clear the starting height.

Galway’s Holden Decker was third in the boys Division II 1,600 meters with a time of 4:36.95.

In the boys Division II 1,600 relay, Johnstown was second as the team of Mills, Nolan Hayes, Trey Stover and Matthew Boyle posted a time of 3:33.71.

Johnstown placed seventh in the boys 400 relay in Division II as the team of Evan White, Boyle, Ryan O’Connor and Stover recorded a time of 46.18 seconds.

Galway’s Rachel Wnuk was fifth in the girls Division II 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.94 seconds. Wnuk also placed fourth in the Division II high jump with a leap of 4-10.

In the girls Division II long jump, Broadalbin-Perth’s Hailey Parrotti (16-3 3/4) was fifth, Fonda-Fultonville’s Emilia Vardai-Davidson (15-7 1/2) was eighth and Mayfield’s Mikayla Myers (15-5 3/4) was 10th.

Parrotti also was third in the girls Division II triple jump with a leap of 34-6 3/4. Myers (32-7) was seventh and Vardai-Davidson (32-3 1/2) was eighth.

Amsterdam’s Jackie Stanavich was second in the girls Division I pentathlon with a total of 2,806 points, while Broadalbin-Perth’s Gabrielle Larsen was eighth in the girls Division II pentathlon with a total of 1,955 points.

Several other area athletes earned state-meet spots Thursday.

Amsterdam’s Lauren Santiago and Stanavich, Broadalbin-Perth’s Sean Meher and John Coddington and Canajoharie’s Marcus Johnson and Andrew Ferguson all picked up state-meet berths on the first day of the state qualifier.

Stanavich will compete in the girls Division I 400-meter intermediate hurdles for the first time at the state meet after winning the event Thursday with a time of 1:05.00.

Santiago will be making her second-straight state meet appearance in the girls Division I 400 meters after winning Thursday with a time of 57.12.

Meher won the boys Division II triple jump and will compete at the state meet for a second-straight time, while Coddington finished second in the Division II boys shot put, but he hit the state-qualifying distance at the Section II Group 3 Championships with a throw of 51-11.

Ferguson and Johnson will be making their first trip to states after earning qualifying berths in the boys Division II 400-meter intermediate hurdles.
