Local soccer teams play in WAC-Wasaren challenge

COLONIE — Several varsity boys soccer teams took part in the Western Athletic Conference versus Wasaren League challenge Saturday at Afrim’s Sports Center.

Galway played Hoosic Valley to a 1-1 draw, while Greenwich topped Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville 3-1, Stillwater topped Mayfield 9-1 and Schoharie defeated Saratoga Catholic 6-2. Northville and Canajoharie faced off in a non-league contest between the WAC contenders with the Falcons notching the 7-1 victory.

Hoosic Valley got the jump on Galway with Derek Howard scoring in the fourth minute of play before Galway tied the match in the closing minutes of the first half with a goal by Anthony Powers off a corner kick from Charlie Clarke.

The Eagles controlled the pace through the second half but could not come up with the game-winner.

Konstantine Freiderich narrowly missed putting the game away in overtime when he collected a ball played out by Hoosic Valley keeper Matt Rowe and took a shot on goal that hit the post and rolled across the face of the goal without crossing the line.

Galway finished with a 15-3 edge in shots on goal and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Grant Baker and Isaac Cutler combined for six goals to lead Stillwater to victory over Mayfield.

Baker finished with four goals and two assists while Cutler added two goals. Harry Rubenstein and Jeff Hotaling for the Warriors who also benefited from an own goal by Mayfield.

Colby Brandow recorded the Panthers goal off an assist from Dawson Leach in the 72nd minute of play.

Mayfield held the edge in corner kicks 3-1,w hile Stillwater led in shots on goal 13-4.

Schoharie got three goals from Derek Dietz and a goal and three assists from Noah Faganani en route to defeating Saratoga Catholic 6-2.

Fletcher Griffen and Quin Barton added goals for the Indians, while Danny Bernhardt added an assist.

Dante Marin and Matthew Apy scored for Spa Catholic.

Andrew Macpheerson collected 12 saves on 18 shots in goal for the Saints, while Bailey Smart had seven saves on eight shots and Jeremy Rehberg had one save on two shots for Schoharie.

Mason Snell scored and Travis Lafountain collected nine saves in goal for OESJ in the Wolfpacks loss to Greenwich.

A.J. Rymph had two goals and an assist for the Witches, while Madigan Carner scored and Andres Gonzalez made two stops.

In the non-league match between Northville and Canajoharie, the Falcons received scoring from five different players.

Curtis Arnold had a pair of first-half goals and an assist for Northville, while Camron Morehouse, Jacob Frank and Josh Bedell added goals in the first 40 minutes.

Arnold hit again to complete his hat trick late in the second half, while Wyatt Sira closed out the scoring off an assist from Josiah Jensen.

Alex Blanchard broke up the shut out with his goal off an assist from Luke Adams to put the final score at 7-1.

Landon Frasier collected three saves in net for Northville, while Andrew Meka made 19 stops for the Cougars (2-6-0 overall, 2-2-0 WAC).

Northville (6-3-0 overall, 4-2-0 WAC) finished with a 33-8 advantage in shots on goal and 11-3 in corner kicks.
