Section II crowns basketball champs

The Section II boys and girls sectional play wrapped up Saturday at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls and Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.

The Shenendehowa boys won the Class AA championship, while Mekeel Christian Academy took home the Class A title and Schalmont won the Class B tournament. Lake George rallied to win its fourth-straight Class C championship and North Warren took home the Class D championship.

Shenendehowa won its second-straight Class AA girls championship Saturday at HVCC, while Averill Park defeated Queensbury for its seventh-straight Class A championship. Mechanicville topped Mekeel Christian Academy in the Class B championship game, while Cambridge won the Class C title and Fort Edward defeated Whitehall for the Class D crown.

The teams now enter regional play with their sights on returning to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.

The boys tournament will be played at the Cool Insuring Arena on March 20-21, while the girls tournament will take place at HVCC on March 20 and 21.

Shenendehowa, Mekeel Christian, Lake George and North Warren all received opening-round bye and will start regional play on Saturday.

Shenendehowa will play Section III champion Corcoran at 2:30 at HVCC, while Mekeel Christian, led by Class A tournament MVP Alex Barnhill, will play the winner between Section III champion Christian Brothers Academy and Section X champion Franklin Academy at 12:45 p.m. at HVCC. Lake George will host either Section VII champion Moriah or Section X champ Madrid-Waddington at 11 a.m.

North Warren will travel to face Section VII champion Schroon Lake at Beekmantown High School at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Schalmont will play an opening round game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Saratoga High School against Section X champion Ogdensburgh Free Academy with the winner advancing to face Section VII champion Saranac 7 p.m. Friday at Beekmantown High School.

For the girls, Shenendehowa will face Section III champion Ciciero-North Syracuse at 4:15 p.m. Saturday at HVCC, while Cambridge will play either Section VII champion Northern Adirondack or Section X champ St. Lawrence Central at 6 p.m. at HVCC.

Mechanicville and Section 10 champion Canton will play a first-round game at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Saratoga High School with the winner advancing to play Section VII champion Northeastern Clinton at 5 p.m. Friday at Beekmantown High School.

Averill Park is slated to place Section X champion Franklin Academy at 6 p.m. Tuesday at SUNY Potsdam with the winner advancing to play Section III champion Christian Brothers Academy at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.

Fort Edward will make the trip to play Section VII champion Bolton at noon Saturday at Beekmantown High School.
