With the spring schedule still in doubt, the Section II football schedule for 2020 was announced Tuesday.

There will be plenty of changes for area teams as Gloversville, Johnstown and Canajoharie-Fort Plain all drop to lower classes this season. Broadalbin-Perth, Amsterdam and Fonda-Fultonville stay in their respective classes, but will face several new foes due to realignment.

Gloversville drops from Class A to B, Johnstown will drop from Class B to C and C-FP will play in Class D this season after playing in Class C last season.

Amsterdam, which went 5-4 last season, will have a new coach in John Homich, who takes over for Doug Edick who stepped down after eight season. Homich and his team will be without its usual home field this season as a revocation project at Lynch Literacy Academy will force the Rams to play their home games elsewhere.

Amsterdam is slated to face Broadalbin-Perth in its season opener Sept. 11, The Rams kick off their Class A Capital Division schedule in Week 2, traveling to Albany. Amsterdam will also be on the road in Week 3 and 4, traveling to Niskayuna and Ballston Spa. The Rams are set to host Troy in Week 5 and LaSalle in Week 6 before heading to Averill Park for their regular-season finale in Week 7.

In its Class B debut, Gloversville is scheduled to host Albany in Week 1 in a Class A/B crossover contest Sept. 11 at Husky Field.

Gloversville, which went 1-8 last season, is back at home in Week 2, hosting Broadalbin-Perth in its Class B North Division opener.

The Huskies are set to travel to Glens Falls in Week 3 before hosting Hudson Falls in Week 4. Gloversville is at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk and Scotia-Glenville for its Week 5 and 6 contests, respectively, before traveling to Green Tech in Week 7 to wrap up the regular season.

Broadalbin-Perth, which went 5-4 last season, is set to face Amsterdam in Week 1 before making the short trip to Gloversville for its Class B North Division opener in Week 2.

The Patriots are set to host Green Tech in Week 3 before traveling to Lansingburgh for a crossover contest in Week 4. B-P is slated to host Glens Falls and Schalmont in Week 5 and 6, respectively, before wrapping up the regular season at Hudson Falls in Week 7.

Johnstown, which went 2-7 in 2019, is scheduled host Cairo-Durham in a Class C crossover contest in its season opener and Class C debut on Sept. 11 at Knox Field. Johnstown will travel to Taconic Hills in Week 2 and Granville in Week 3 before returning home to face Schuylerville in Week 4.

The Sir Bills are set to travel to Mechanicville in Week 5 before hosting Corinth-Fort Edward in Week 6. Johnstown wraps up its regular season at Fonda-Fultonville in Week 7.

After posting a 7-2 record in 2019, Fonda-Fultonville will host Taconic Hills in its season opener Sept. 11. In Week 2, the Braves are slated to travel to Cairo-Durham/Catskill before opening Class C North Division play at Schuylerville in Week 3. FFCS is slated to host Corinth-Fort Edward in Week 4 before traveling to Granville for a Week 5 meeting. The Braves are back home for Week 6 and 7, hosting Mechanicville and Johnstown, respectively.

Canajoharie-Fort Plain returns to Class D this season and will host Helderberg Valley in Week 1.

C-FP, which went 4-5 last season, has an open date so far for Week 2 before traveling to Cohoes for its Week 3 contest. Canajoharie-Fort Plain is slated to host Hoosic Valley in Week 4 before traveling to Rensselaer in Week 5. C-FP returns home to face Voorheesville in Week 6 before ending the regular season at Chatham in Week 7.

Four of the area’s seven high school football teams reached the postseason last year as Amsterdam, Broadalbin-Perth, Fonda-Fultonville and Dolgeville qualified for the playoffs. Gloversville, Canajoharie-Fort Plain and Johnstown all missed the postseason in 2019.

The Section II Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D Section III Class D quarterfinal games and crossover games will take place Oct. 30 and 31. The Section II Class AA playoffs are set to begin Nov. 6 with semifinal contests. The sectional championship games will take place the weekend of Nov. 13 and 14.

Week 0

The season schedule may also feature a Week 0 contest, which would allows schools to play a non-league contest rather than a scrimmage to start the season the first weekend of September.

The proposal, which if approved would allow a 14-week schedule, is scheduled to be voted on by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Executive Committee at its May 27 meeting.

“In essence, it would be a preseason game in lieu of a scrimmage on what would be scrimmage weekend,” Section II Football Coordinator Bob Dorrance said in an e-mail. “Much is still up in the air about this, but an up to date list of potential match-ups is listed at the end of the schedule. Right now, teams are trying to set-up their own games in week zero and will conduct this game. However, the two coaching staffs involved decide to. Some obviously are rivalry games, so they may be played slightly differently than other games that week.”

If measure is approved, tentative Week 0 contests for local teams would include Gloversville against Johnstown and Broadalbin-Perth against Fonda-Fultonville.

Divisional breakdown

There were several changes to the Section II and Section III divisional lineups.

Bethlehem, CBA, Colonie, Guilderland, Columbia, Saratoga Springs, Schenectady, Shaker and Shenendehowa will make up the lone Class AA division. Columbia moves up after playing in Class A last season.

The top four teams in Class A will advance to the playoffs. All of the other classes will use an eight-team playoff format.

In Class A, joining Albany in the Capital Division will be Amsterdam, Averill Park, Columbia, Niskayuna, La Salle and Troy. Albany will be ineligible for the postseason as it is playing down a classification, while Niskayuna played in Class AA last season.

The Class A Grasso Division features Ballston Spa, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, Mohonasen, Queensbury, Scotia-Glenville and South Glens Falls.

Broadalbin-Perth and Gloversville will join Glens Falls, Hudson Falls and Green Tech in the Class B North Division. Green Tech was in the Class A Capital Division last season.

Holy Trinity, Cobleskill-Richmondville, Hudson, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, Lansingburgh and Schalmont make up the Class B Reinfurt Division. Lansingburgh was in the North Division last season.

Johnstown, defending Class B champion Schuylerville and Ichabod Crane all dropped from Class B to Class C this season.

Johnstown, Fonda-Fultonville, Schuylerville, Granville, Mechanicville and Corinth-Fort Edward make up the Class C North Division. Corinth-Fort Edward was a Class D school last season.

The Class C South Division features Cairo-Durham/Catskill, Coxsackie-Athens, Taconic Hills, Watervliet, Hoosick Falls/Tamarac and Ichabod Crane.

After having just six teams last season, Class D will feature 13 teams in 2020.

Two-time defending Class D champion Warrensburg, Whitehall, Greenwich, Cambridge-Salem, Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne and Stillwater make up the North Division.

The Class D South Division is made up of Helderberg Valley, Chatham, Canajoharie-Fort Plain, Voorheesville, Rensselaer, Cohoes and Hoosic Valley.

Canajoharie-Fort Plain, Voorheesville, Cambridge-Salem, Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne and Stillwater all played in Class C last season before the classification number changes sent them to Class D. Rensselaer did not field a varsity team in 2019, while Cohoes is playing down in classification and won’t be eligible for the postseason.

Section III, which had just one Class D division last season, will split into two divisions this season as the change in classification numbers increased the total of Class D schools from eight to 11.

Dolgeville will compete in the Class D East Division with Utica-Notre Dame, Herkimer, defending Section III Class D champion Frankfort-Schuyler, Sauquoit Valley and Waterville. Herkimer and Utica-Notre Dame both dropped down after competing in Class C last season.

Beaver River, Cato-Meridian, Onondaga, Sandy Creek and Thousand Islands make up the Class D North-West Division.
