GLOVERSVILLE — The Gloversville lady Dragons returned to varsity-level competition for the first time in since 2019 Thursday night in Fulton County League action against Broadalbin-Perth at Gloversville High School.

The Lady Patriots got off to a quick start and pulled away to defeat Gloversville 57-16 in the season opener for both teams.

“We are a young team and there were a lot of first-game nerves out there for both them and me,” said first-year Gloversville varsity coach Emily Parslow in a post-game phone interview. “I told them it is OK to be nervous the for the first minute but not after that.”

After being shut out for most of the first quarter, Gloversville got its first points of the game when Layla Chapin followed her shot and put up a long rebound late in the first quarter.

“That was such a relief for us to get those first points,” Parslow said.

That would be the Lady Dragons’ lone first-quarter points as Broadalbin-Perth used a solid zone defense to force turnovers and open up their running game to break out to a 16-2 lead.

The Lady Patriots remained in control with 10 players putting points in the book en route to the victory.

Emma Goebel led Broadalbin-Perth with 12 points, all coming in the opening half. Lauralie Grainer, Julia Mycek and Camille Calderone all scored eight points and Haleigh Hayes had six points.

Abigail Curtis led Gloversville with eight points, including two 3-pointers, while Brooke Dutcher and Allie Salvione had three points apiece and Chapin finished with two.

“We did better against their zone as the game went along,” Parslow said.

Broadalbin-Perth (1-0) will travel to play Northville (0-0) Saturday evening, while Gloversville (0-1) will take to the road to face Mayfield (0-1) Saturday afternoon.
