Racing Around: Big week of Super DIRTcar Series events on tap

PHOTOGRAPHER:

The month of July is traditionally prime time for big-money racing series events.

This year is no exception.

Starting tonight, the Super DIRTcar Series invades the Land of Legends Speedway in Canandaigua for the Stars and Stripes 76.

Friday night, the third leg of the F.X. Caprara Car companies Thunder on the Thruway Series will hit the track at Utica-Rome Speedway with a 30-lap, $4,000-to-win event for the modifieds along with a $1,500-to-win feature for the Crate 602 Sportsman division and a $1,000-to-win main event for the Pro Stocks.

The action then swings to Fonda Speedway on Saturday for the Series’ fourth round, weather permitting.

The competition will be looking to stop Stewart Friesen’s streak at Fonda Speedway on Sunday when racing returns to the Track of Champions for the fourth annual Short Track Super Series’ $10,000-to-win Firecracker 50. Friesen has taken home the top prize in the past three Firecracker 50s.

The 602 Sportsmen also are on Sunday’s race card, competing for $2,000 to win in the STSS North Region points race.

HALL OF FAME WEEKEND

Saturday also will be the annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Fonda Speedway Hall of Fame & Museum.

Being honored this year in the Class of 2022 are modified driver A.J. Romano, multi-time sportsman track champion Tim Clemons, pro stock champion and original member of the Outback Gang Steve Welch, and car owner Jeff McWalker.

The sixth annual Dedication to the Fonda Speedway Museum Award will be presented to Hall of Fame members and team owners Alton & Carole Palmer along with the Eagles Club 3846 of Canajoharie.

The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. at the Fonda Speedway Museum on the Fonda Fairgrounds.

JORDAN THOMAS RECOVERING

Last Saturday, while competing in a qualifier for the Patriot Sprint Tour A-main, driver Jordan Thomas pulled off to the inside of the front stretch, jumped out of a fiery cockpit and promptly did a stop-drop-and-roll on the infield as the Fonda Speedway track safety crew rushed to his aide and extinguishing a methanol fire.

Thomas suffered second degree burns on his left calf and both ankles. His is home and is expected to make a full recovery

DARWIN GREENE JR. JOINS DAD IN COMPETITION

Saturday night, I watched as Darwin Greene Jr. scurried around his father’s new Bicknell, making sure everything was in shape for the night’s racing.

Greene Jr. has entered the racing ranks, competing in the XCEL 600 modifieds at Penn Can Speedway, while his father competes in the modified ranks there on Friday nights.

Their paint schemes are similar, only Junior prefers purple flames instead of green on his ride.

QUICK TOPS FIELD AT THE RIDGE

Ricky Quick picked up the victory Sunday night in the Red Chair DIRTcar 602 Sportsman main event, while Luke Horning topped the field in the Yurkewecz Auto Crushers Pro Stock feature and Butchie Irwin won the Limited Sportsman feature.

Dominick Denue won the Street Stock main event, while Adam Fusco won the All-Star Slingshot feature and Jaden Pierce topped the podium in the Junior Slingshots.

Billy Hillman took top honors in the Dual Overhead Cam Ministock feature, while Jay Ingersoll won the SOHC trophy, giving the Palmer’s Service race team two victories on the night.

BIG SPRINT WEEKEND FOR VARIN

After winning the PST Earl Halaquist Memorial Saturday night at Fonda Speedway, Danny Varin is looking at a four-day Empire Super Sprints Speedweek with the No. 01 sprint car.

Wednesday night, Varin headed to Can-Am Speedway before going to Thunder Mountain Speedway tonight, Brewerton Speedway on Friday and Fulton Speedway on Saturday.
