AMSTERDAM — After the Amsterdam Mohawks tied Saugerties on Tuesday, they couldn’t say their 14-game winning streak was still intact, but they could say they hadn’t lost in 15 games.
After Friday, however, that streak has gone, too. Mohawk Valley got out to an early lead and rode a solid pitching performance from Fort Plain’s Troy Butler in a 5-3 win over Amsterdam at Shuttleworth Park.
Garrett Musey’s three-run home run in the top of the first gave the DiamondDawgs a 3-0 lead.
Amsterdam (34-5) scored one run in the third. Josh Overbeek had a leadoff single, stole second and scored on Ian Pertutz’s RBI-single.
Mohawk Valley (23-17) added a run in the fourth on Pete Durocher’s sacrifice fly. The Mohawks countered in the fifth when Overbeek hit a one-out single, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
Mohawk Valley tacked on an unearned run in the ninth. Amsterdam also scored one in the bottom half of the inning when Cade Bush’s single drove in Briggs Rutter.
Butler, who attends Herkimer College, struck out 10 and allowed six hits over 7 1-3 innings.
