Strong first half powers Gloversville football past Green Tech

GLOVERSVILLE The Gloversville Huskies failed to score on only one offensive drive in the first half as they defeated Green Tech 42-24 in Class B football action Friday night at Robert E. Gould Stadium at Husky Field.

The Huskies (2-0) received the opening kickoff and Leo Perez capped off a 58-yard drive with a 23-yard touchdown run.

The Gloversville defense held the Eagles in check and finished its second drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Caelan Porter to Logan Oathout. Jordan Yanno added the extra point for a quick 13-0 advantage midway through the opening quarter.

The Huskies added a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Kyle Robare after Green Tech got on the board thanks to a 61-yard touchdown run from Isaac Sylvain.

Gloversville recorded a safety on Green Tech’s opening possession of the second quarter before Yanno hit the first of his two second-quarter field goals to extend the Huskies’ lead to 25-8.

Defensive lineman Devon Sisco picked a loose ball out of the air and carried it 2 yards into the end zone for a touchdown to help the Huskies take a 35-8 lead into the locker room at the half.

Perez scored his second touchdown of the game, a 25-yard run, in a penalty-filled third quarter to build the Huskies’ lead to 42-8 heading into the fourth quarter.

Isaac Sylvain added touchdown runs of 69 and 25 for the Eagles in the final quarter to put the final score at 42-24 in favor of Gloversville.

Sylvain finished the night with 216 yards rushing on 13 carries and three touchdowns.

Perez led the Gloversville rushing game with 72 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns, while Robare added 43 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Porter finished his second game as the Gloversville starting quarterback with 133 yards in a 7-for-16, one-touchdown passing performance.

Gloversville will put its two game season-opening win streak on the line next Friday when the Huskies host Lansingburgh in a 7 p.m. contest.
