Fonda/Johnstown’s Hicks named WAC Most Outstanding Wrestler

Fonda/Johnstown wrestler Owen Hicks has his hand raised after beating Greenville’s Kieran Cullen in the Section II Division 2 145-pound championship Feb. 11 at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls.

HIGH SCHOOLS – After winning the regular-season league title, the Fonda/Johnstown wrestling team was well-represented on the Western Athletic Conference all-star team.

Owen Hicks was named the WAC Most Outstanding Wrestler and a first-team all-star at 145 pounds. Hicks was second at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division II Tournament. Hicks posted a 43-4 record this season.

Fonda/Johnstown also had Jonathan Swartwout (110 pounds), Jonathan Cranker (172) and Johnathan Sammons (215) named to the first team. Swartwout finished his second with a 23-19 record, Cranker was 31-12 and Sammons was 27-13.

In addition to their first-team selections, Fonda/Johnstown’s Kyran Clark (118), Matt Livingston (126), Logan McCoy (138) and Collin Pickering (145) earned second-team recognition. Clark was 9-14 overall, Livingston was 16-19, McCoy went 28-17 and Pickering posted a 21-15 record.

Canajoharie/Fort Plain placed Chloe Haig (102), Austin Horender (118), Alex Smith (126) and Christian Burke (160) on the first team. Courage Dunn (110) earned second-team honors for C-FP. Haig posted a 13-7 record this season, Horender was 24-5, Smith was 21-7, Burke finished 23-7 and Dunn posted a 12-6 record.

Rounding out the first-team selections were Duanesburg/Schoharie’s Scotty Nicolella (132), Daniel Stealey (138), Jacob Schweigard (152) and Tyler Ward (285), along with Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Middleburgh’s Jason Basle (189).

Duanesburg/Schoharie also had Tyler Lewandowski (132), Lucas Grenier (152), Logan Krause (172) and Dalton Cooper (215) named second-team all-stars.

Rounding out the second-team selections were Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Middleburgh’s River Townsend (160), Lincoln Snyder (189) and Matthew Dibble (285).
