High schools: Section 2 boys’ lacrosse tournament pairings set

Niskayuna received a first-round bye in the Section 2 Class B boys’ lacrosse tournament on Wednesday. Niskayuna will face the winner of the Columbia-La Salle game in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Union College’s Frank Bailey Field. No. 4 Columbia will host fifth-seeded La Salle at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The other quarterfinal matchups are sixth-seeded Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth at No. 3 Queensbury at 5 p.m. Friday, and No. 2 Ballston Spa hosting No. 7 Troy at 4:15 p.m. Thursday. The winners of those games will play at the higher seed at 5 p.m. Monday. The championship game will be 5 p.m. May 25 at Shaker.

In Class A, Shaker received a first-round bye and will host the winner of CBA-Bethlehem at 6:30 p.m. Monday. No. CBA hosts No. 5 Bethlehem at 4:15 p.m. Friday.

Second-seeded Shenendehowa hosts No. 7 Colonie at 5:30 p.m. Friday, while third-seeded Saratoga Springs takes on No. 6 Guilderland at 7 p.m. The winners of those games meet at 5 p.m. Monday at the highest remaining seed. The championship game will be hosted by Shaker at 5 p.m. May 26.

In Class C, first-round byes went to top-seeded South Glens Falls, No. 2 Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake and No. 3 Scotia-Glenville. Scotia visits Burnt Hills at 6 p.m. Monday in the semifinals, while South Glens Falls hosts the winner of Glens Falls-Averill Park at 5 p.m. Monday. No. 4 Glens Falls hosts No. 5 Averill Park at 5 p.m. Friday. The title game is at Shaker at 7:30 p.m. May 25.

Schuylerville is the top seed in Class D, Stillwater/Mechanicville is No. 2, and both teams have a first-round bye. Schuylerville will host the winner of Greenwich-Johnstown at 7 p.m. Monday. No. 5 Johnstown visits No. 4 Greenwich at 5 p.m. Friday. Stillwater/Mechanicville will take on the winner of the Tamarac/Hoosick Falls-Voorheesville game at 7 p.m. Monday at Stillwater. No. 3 Tamarac/Hoosick Falls host No. 6 Voorheesville at 2 p.m. Friday. The title game will be at Shaker at 7:30 p.m. May 26.

BALLSTON SPA BASEBALL RALLIES TO WIN

Ballston Spa only had three hits, but took advantage of 11 walks to beat Shaker 9-8 in the first round of the Section 2 Class AA baseball tournament. The Scotties were down 5-3 after the top of the fifth, but they scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and then got three more runs in the sixth. Shane Slezak homered for Ballston Spa, as did PJ Strand for Shaker with a two-run shot. Cam Mailloux had a double and single for the Blue Bison, and Ben Belliss drove in two runs.

Anthony Fasolino had a double, single and four RBIs, and Dillon DePiero added a double, single and three RBIs as Mohonasen scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 6-6 tie and beat South Glens Falls 9-6 in the first round of Class A play. Israhel Travis had a double and two singles for Mohonasen, AJ Crux had a double and James Wilson added two singles. James Thompson led South Glens Falls with a double and three RBIs.

In another first-round game, La Salle beat Scotia-Glenville 14-1.

JJ Trudeau pitched a complete-game one-hitter and struck 12 as Cohoes beat Catskill 4-0 in Class B first-round play. Trudeau also had a triple and an RBI. Nicholas Chicaway added two singles, and  Nick Sparzo had an RBI double.

Kyle Bartlett struck out 11 in going the distance in Ichabod Crane’s 3-1 win over Hudson. Bartlett had a double. Jack Mullins hit a solo homer for Ichabod Crane.

Schuylerville beat Fonda-Fultonville 5-3 behind Alex Renner’s 2 for 3 and two RBIs. Anthony Luzadis was also 2 for 3 for Schuylerville. Logan Yaggle homered, singled and drove in two runs for Fonda-Fultonville.
