Royal Mountain sees large motocross fields for season-opening weekend

CAROGA LAKE — The racing season got off to a strong start at Royal Mountain Ski Area over the weekend.

Royal hosted a two-day Central New York Motocross Racers Association event on Saturday and Sunday.

The picture-perfect weather drew a total of 478 entries on Saturday and 428 entries on Sunday.

Royal Mountain will be back in action June 7 when it is scheduled to host its opening night of supercross competition.

SUNDAY

Three area riders picked up wins Sunday.

Gloversville’s Salvatore Attigliato won the plus-25 class, while St. Johnsville’s Blaire Wilson won the mini quad open 51-90cc class.

Fort Plain’s Spencer Mang won the 122-open expert class and was second in the 122-250cc expert class. Mang also was second in the collegeboy 17-to-24-year-old class.

Several riders notched wins in multiple classes Sunday.

Ilion’s Joey Metott picked up wins in three classes. Metott won the 122-125cc two-stroke), open mini 79-112cc and schoolboy 85-250cc 12-to-16-year-old classes.

West Chazy’s Shawn Nutt won the plus-30 expert and plus-40 expert classes, while Petersburg’s Scott Phelps won the plus-45 expert and plus-50 expert. Catskill’s Tyler Loud won the plus-25 expert and 122-250cc expert classes. Oneonta’s Carter Sargent won the 51cc pee wee senior 7-and-8-year-old and 51cc open 4-to-8-year-old classes.

Other winners included Slingerlands’ Shawn Flansburg Jr. (51cc pee wee junior 4-6), Sherburne’s Michael Grover (plus-30), Newark Valley’s Matt Rockwell (plus-40), Malone’s Cory Bogett (plus-45), Scott Phelps (plus-45 expert), Castile’s Harlee Wood (women 85-250cc), Pawlet, Vermont’s Bailey Sheldon (girls 65-150cc, 10-16), Salem’s Zach Johnson (122-250cc novice), Binghamton’s Karson Walter (122-250cc amateur), Canaan, Connecticut’s Zachary Martin (122-open novice), Ravena’s Nick Touzin (122-open amateur), Croghan’s Cale Widrick (65cc two-stroke 7-11), Whitney Point’s Trevor David (junior mini two-stroke 59-85cc 9-11), Croghan’s Winston Widrick (senior mini 79-85cc 12-15) and Croghan’s Gavin Walseman (collegeboy 17-24).

In the quad classes, Ballston Spa’s Cody Milanese (quad amateur), Maryland’s Wyndham Spooner (quad expert), Trumbull, Connecticut’s Brennan Mcgrath (plus-25 quad), Corinth’s Easton Morris (mini quad 50cc) and Wallkill’s Colten Gillespie (quad schoolboy/girl) posted wins.

Several area riders posted top-five finishes in their respective classes.

Amsterdam’s Maverick Manzer was second in the 51cc pee wee junior 4-to-6-year-old class. Manzer also was fourth in the 51cc open 4-to-8-year-old class, while St. Johnsville’s Burton Wilson IV was fifth.

Broadalbin’s Ryan Rose was fourth in the plus-30 class, while Johnstown’s Michael Ward was fifth in the plus-45 expert. Gloversville’s Sal Attigliato Jr. was second in the 51cc pee wee senior 7-and-8-year-old class. Attigliato also was second in the 65cc two-stroke 7-to-11-year-old class.

In the 122-250cc novice class, Broadalbin’s Owen Marek was fourth and Pattersonville’s Marc Hartje was fifth. Marek also was fifth in the 122-open novice class.

Johnstown’s Brett Unser was fourth in the 122-250cc amateur class, while Canajoharie’s C.J. Renzi was fourth in the 122-open amateur class.

In the plus-25 class, Wells’ Ken Chicoski Jr. was fourth and Gloversville’s Anthony Attigliato was fifth.

Fultonville’s Kendra Cary was fifth in the quad novice class, while Johnstown’s Ian Cary was fifth in the quad expert class.

Gloversville’s Eastyn Rizzo was second in the mini quad 50cc class, while Fort Plain’s Ryelee David was fifth. Gloversville’s Tyler Rizzo was second in the quad schoolboy/girl class, Mayfield’s Chloe Van Nostrand was fourth and Fultonville’s Ava Cary was fifth.

Johnstown’s Maxx Miller was second in the senior mini 79-85cc 12-to-15-year-old class, while Johnstown’s Kip Simonds III was fourth. Miller also was third in the open mini 79-112cc class.

Fonda’s Tyler Blowers was fifth in the collegeboy 17-to-24-year-old class, while Amsterdam’s Damion Brown was fifth in the mini quad open 51-90cc class.

SATURDAY

On the opening day of the two-day event, six area riders picked up victories on Saturday.

Gloversville’s Sal Attigliato Jr. won the 51cc pee wee senior 7-and-8-year-old and 51cc open 4-to-8-year-old classes. Attigliato also was third in the 65cc two-stroke 7-to-11-year-old class.

Fort Plain’s Spencer Mang won the 122-open expert and collegeboy 17-to-24-year-old classes. Mang also was third in the 122-250cc expert class.

In the quad schoolboy/girl class, Gloversville’s Tyler Rizzo was second and Mayfield’s Chloe Van Nostrand was third.

Johnstown’s Kip Simonds III was fourth in the senior mini 79-85cc 12-to-15-year-old class, while Fonda’s Tyler Blowers was fourth in the collegeboy 17-to-24-year-old class.
