School softball: Stillwater upsets Whitehall to reach Class C semifinals

HIGH SCHOOLS – Lily Russell had a hit, two RBIs and a run to help seventh-seeded Stillwater upset second-seeded Whitehall 3-1 in the Class C quarterfinals of the Section 2 softball tournament on Thursday. Ava Russell added the other RBI, while Eden Resch struck out five and threw a one-hitter. Madison Gould struck out 17 for Whitehall. Stillwater will play third-seeded Greenwich in the semifinals at Moreau Rec.

All semifinals are scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Fourth-seeded Berne-Knox-Westerlo earned a walk-off 7-6 win over 12th-seeded Hoosic Valley, as Nina Lefkaditis’ hit to center field was the winning shot. Natalie Elble went 2 for 3 in the victory. The Bulldogs face top-seeded Chatham at Moreau Rec. in a semifinal. Chatham rallied with a three-run bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 win over No. 9 Hoosick Falls. 

Taylor Quinn went 3 for 4 with a double, home run, two RBIs and three runs to lead top-seeded Colonie to a 13-1 win over No. 8 Albany in a Class AA quarterfinal. Katie Parisi was 4 for 4 with a double, RBI and two runs in the victory. Gabby Baumann hit two doubles and four RBIs. Hnaya Zullo drove in Albany’s run. The Garnet Raiders face fifth-seeded Saratoga Springs in the semifinals at Schalmont.

Natalia Colone delivered a walk-off single to give third-seeded Shenendehowa a 1-0 win over sixth-seeded Shaker. Bre Hayes struck out 11 for the Plainsmen and allowed just one hit. Emily Baumes went 2 for 3. Shenendehowa meets No. 2 Guilderland, a 10-3 winner over Niskayuna, in the semifinals at Schalmont. Maddie Isabelle doubled and had two RBIs for Niskayuna.

Meghan Paul went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI to lead Guilderland. Lillie Teague had three RBIs, while Alyssa Griffin homered for the winners. 

Jill Capozucca doubled, homered and drove in four runs to lead top-seeded South Glens Falls to a 6-1 win over eighth-seeded Columbia in Class A action. Emma Martens was 2 for 4 with a double. Peyton Stavrou doubled and scored for Columbia. The Bulldogs will face fourth-seeded Averill Park in a semifinal at Luther Forest Athletic Fields. Averill Park earned a 6-5 walk-off win over No. 5 Hudson Falls. 

Maisie Dawson homered and drove in two to lead Averill Park. Anna Winter homered for Hudson Falls.

Olivia DeCitise struck out 14 in leading second-seeded Troy to a 12-0 shutout of seventh-seeded Scotia-Glenville. She also homered twice. Katie Pryor hit a grand slam in the win.Bella Harold singled twice for Scotia-Glenville. Troy meets third-seeded Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the other semifinal at Luther Forest.

Danielle DeBonis homered, and Cianna Benamati’s fielder’s choice delivered the go-ahead run in Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s 6-3 win over No. 6 Queensbury. 

In Class B, top-seeded Ichabod Crane scored four runs in the first inning and kept the cushion in an 8-4 win over No. 9 Catholic Central/Bishop Gibbons. Emma Scheitinger went 2 for 2 with a triple, RBI and two runs for the Riders. Abby Milazzo doubled and scored twice. Skyler Wessels was 3 for 3 with a double and a run for Catholic Central/Bishop Gibbons. Meaghan Finn added two singles and an RBI. Ichabod Crane meets fifth-seeded Mechanicville, a 7-4 winner over No. 4 Schuylerville, in a semifinal at Luther Forest.

Third-seeded Glens Falls shut out sixth-seeded Fonda-Fultovnille 12-0. Kam Walton went 2 for 2 with a pair of singles for Fonda-Fultonville. Taylor Ferrucci added a single. Glens Falls faces second-seeded Tamarac, a 25-14 winner over Coxsackie-Athens, in the other Luther Forest semifinal. Moira Collins went 4 for 5 with a grand slam and six RBIs to pace Tamarac. Natalya Horton was 4 for 5 with two RBIs.

In Class D, Natalie Cody went 4 for 4 with a triple, RBI and two runs to lead fifth-seeded Fort Ann to an 8-3 win over No. 4 Hartford/Fort Edward. The Cardinals will meet top-seeded Salem in the semifinals at Moreau Rec.
