Amsterdam, Albany split PGCBL doubleheader

ALTAMONT — A six-run fifth inning helped the Amsterdam Mohawks top Albany 9-5 in the first game of a PGCBL doubleheader on Thursday. But the Dutchmen got their revenge in the second game, shutting out Amsterdam 4-0.

In the first game, Mason Swinney got the big fifth inning started with an RBI double. He came around to score the second run on a bases-loaded walk. After the Mohawks scored another run that way, Luke Longo followed with a two-run single. Cam Gurney finished things with an RBI single.

Longo added a two-RBI double in the top of the seventh. He finished 2 for 3 with four RBIs and a walk. Jared Johnson’s RBI single accounted for the other run that inning.

Jalen DeBose and Maximus Martin each scored two runs for Amsterdam.

Maximilian Ramirez earned the pitching win, while Von Baker struck out four in two and one-third innings of relief.

Burnt Hills’ Vince Venditti led Albany by going 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and three runs.

In the second game, Albany (16-19) scored all of its runs in the fifth. It scored the first two on a fielder’s choice and a passed ball before Will Binder and Brody Keneston added RBI singles.

Four Albany pitchers held Amsterdam (33-4-1), a single from Marek Houston. Carson Cotugno took the pitching loss.

The Mohawks are off Friday. They host the Utica Blue Sox at 6:35 p.m. Saturday at Shuttleworth Park.
