RACING AROUND: The Ridge finally hosts season opener

The rain broke long enough that, after four-straight postponements, Glen Ridge Motorsports Park finally got its first racing event of the season in the books.

Rocky Warner, who has been a supporter of racing at The Ridge since the street stocks were the feature class, got the season off to a strong start, parking the Jake Spraker-owned crate modified No. 1J in victory lane, while another longtime supporter and defending track champion Luke Horning topped the field in the pro stock main event and Brendan Gibbons won the initial limited sportsman feature of the season.

The slingshot division continues to be a big draw at the facility, with 21 racers checking in (12 All-Star Slingshots and 9 junior). Danny Ballard picked up the win for the seniors class, while Brock “Bam Bam” Pickerous won the Junior Slingshot feature.

Jason Samrov took home the Street Stock feature win.

The Ridge will look to build off its opening night draw of 59 total cars as the CRSA 305 sprint cars return to the 1/4 mile racing surface for the first time in three years.

The mini-stock division will take center stage this week in the first special event of the season put together by Damon Anderson — The Mini-Shock!

This could get interesting as the 4-cylinders will go 50 laps with $500 going to the first Single Overhead Cam and $500 to the first Dual Overhead Cam cars across the line.

Pit gates open at 2 p.m. with the grandstands opening at 3. Racing is set to hit the track for hot laps at 4:30 p.m. General admission is $10. and there will be free popcorn for the spectators!

Race program changes

After last weeks rain-shortened race program at Fonda Speedway, there have been minor changes to the race schedule for the next couple of weeks.

Saturday’s race program will include two 30-lap Sunoco Modified features — the held over one from last Saturday plus the regularly scheduled main event. This will be run with the 25-lap Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman class, which will be running for $1,000 to win thanks to Eric Orozco Racing this week, Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman, Algonkin Motel Pro Stocks, Trackside Body Works Street Stocks, Four Cylinder Cruisers, and the “Mystique Rush” featuring the Mohawk Valley Vintage cars.

A couple more special events going on at The Track of Champions this week include a Bicycle Giveaway for kids sponsored by the Fonda Speedway Kid’s Club as well as a benefit for the Make a Wish Foundation with donations accepted all evening at the Make a Wish display table plus the National Anthem will be performed by the Northville Central School band.

The Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 sportsman division will run double features on June 8 to make up for the rained out main event from last week, while the Patriot Sprint Tour will run the Earl Halaquist memorial feature on Friday Sept. 27 as part of the Fonda 200 Weekend.
