JOHNSTOWN — The 47th annual Billy Hladik bowling tournament will take place on March 7 at noon at Perry Lanes. The tournament consists of five-person teams, any combination (all men, all women or a combination) at a cost of $100 per team.
It is regular bowling with a handicap of 80% of 1100 per team.
Hladik was an outstanding high school athlete participating on both the baseball and bowling teams. He perished in a fire on March 8, 1973. Friends held a baseball tournament the first year and in 1974, started the William Hladik scholarship fund. Thousands of dollars of scholarships have been awarded over the years.
The first bowling tournament was held at the Johnstown Bowling Center and then with the cooperation of the late Jim Lomanto, the tournament moved to Perry Lanes.
Scholarship entries are carefully read by committee members to determine winners. Members look for financial need, character and academics. Entrants do not need to be a member of a sports program to be considered.
Jack Callery was the president of the scholarship committee until 2009 when he turned the duties over to members of the Hladik family. Larry Razzano has bowled in this tournament since its inception.
There will be prize raffles, money raffles and music provided by Dr. Kwazy Tunes. Please join us for a day of fun while helping some local high school students reach their goals.
Anyone wishing to sponsor a lane or donate a prize or basket for the raffle, please call Connie at (518) 762-9305 or Perry Lanes at (518) 762-8618.
