LOUDONVILLE — Bishop Emeritus Howard J. Hubbard will receive a private burial, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany wrote on Wednesday. The retired bishop, who unsuccessfully requested to leave the priesthood last year, died of a stroke this past Saturday. He was 84 years old. Troy-born, Hubbard spent decades promoting social justice while at the helm of 125 parishes that served about 360,000 Roman Catholics residing in the 14-county diocese. Bishop Emeritus Howard Hubbard, who guided the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany for nearly four decades and came under fire in recent years for his handling of child sexual abuse cases, as well as abuse accusations made against him directly, died Saturday at Albany Medical Center.Hubbard, a Troy native, was known as a champion of social justice causes during his tenure leading his home diocese from 1977 to 2014.
