Hawkins, Gloversville nonprofit gathers community to learn about, commemorate Juneteenth

GLOVERSVILLE — On Monday afternoon, a community group led by Lashawn Hawkins organized a Juneteenth educational event at Castiglione Memorial Park, followed by a showing of “Remember the Titans” across the street at Glove Theater. “Last year, we did an educational piece and I explained what Juneteenth is and why we celebrate it,” said Hawkins, who founded the organization I Can Breathe and I Will Speak. “We did it at the Northstar Cafe, but they’re not here anymore, so we moved to the park,” Hawkins added. “This year, the library collaborated with me and they brought books for us to…
