FONDA — Peace activists and scholars will make their way to Fonda this weekend as the Kateri Tekakwitha Peace Conference meets for its 25th year. This year’s two-day-long conference will focus on the theme of progressing past the use of war in order to protect the planet, protect life and, ultimately, protect peace. “We live in a war culture and most people are quite unaware of what’s going on,” said John Amidon, one of the organizers of the conference and a Marine Corp veteran. MOHAWK — The state Department of Transportation will likely receive authorization to remove a low-hanging bridge on state Highway 334 in Mohawk. Representatives from Johnstown and Gloversville, which co-own a stretch of the former Fonda, Johnstown and Gloversville Railroad under a public corporation, plan to seal the bridge's fate following structural warnings from NYSDOT. Since the spring, members of the long-dormant Fulton Railroad Properties board mulled over potentially using the bridge to connect the FJ&G Trail in Fulton County to the Mohawk-Hudson Bikeway.
