WHEELERVILLE — Invasive species such as Eurasian milfoil, pondweed and spiny water fleas have long threatened Fulton County waters. And it's something children in Caroga are slated to learn about later this week. "It's just the type of thing that makes plants seem to be with us forever so we just have to build that into our thinking, not just going to the lakes and removing it after the fact," said Canada Lakes Conservation Association President Marcus Harazin. Caroga on Friday will be the first southern Adirondack locale to host a youth-level training session developed by the Adirondack Watershed Institute…

MONTGOMERY AND FULTON COUNTIES — The Pizza Hut restaurants in Amsterdam, Gloversville and Johnstown permanently closed their doors this week. All three local restaurants served their final slices on Wednesday, according to community members and local media reports. A handwritten note posted Thursday on the door of the Pizza Hut on Route 30 in Amsterdam put it bluntly: “Closed 4 Good.” Phone calls to each of the shops are connected to an automated message apologizing for the inconvenience of the restaurants being “closed at this time.” The restaurants were removed from the list of available carryout locations on the Pizza Hut website…

JOHNSTOWN — David D'Amore will serve another term as president of the Greater Johnstown School District Board of Education. He was re-elected to the seat at the board's Monday meeting and Jennifer Sponnoble was elected vice president. Each term is one year. "So much of what I was hopeful to be able to participate in was disrupted by the pandemic, and since [Superintendent] Dr. [William] Crankshaw has been on board, I've really started to see some good progress with the development of our educational programs," D'Amore said. The district, D'Amore touted, in recent years has stood on relatively stable footing…

GLOVERSVILLE — Paranormal investigator Shelley Brienza has a plan to cultivate new interest in a Gloversville museum. It involves ghost sleuthing, psychic readings, and Sasquatch stories. "Like myself, I didn't really know [the museum] existed," Brienza said. "Hopefully, this will help put them out on the map, so to speak." On Saturday, she's holding an event dedicated to paranormal activity and mysticism at the Karpeles Museum on Kingsboro Avenue. Vendors, lecturers and television personalities deep-dyed to supernormal affairs will pack the scene. "The paranormal is a hot topic I think most anywhere," Brienza said. Paranormal investigators will guide attendants through an interactive…

Fulton County lawyers up amid lawsuit against migrant orders from New York City

JOHNSTOWN — Fulton County is among a bevy of state localities defended by Sokoloff Stern, LLP in a New York City lawsuit over migrant policy. More than 30 localities are facing litigation over emergency orders aimed at protecting resources from a recent influx of migrants. Such actions hinder city officials from finding temporary housing for asylum seekers, per state and federal regulations, the lawsuit claims.  Under set hourly terms, Fulton County will pay $260 for firm partners, $240 for associates and $110 for paralegals. Fulton County Attorney Jason Brott on Monday recommended that the Board of Supervisors approve a contract with…

JOHNSTOWN — In June, the Fulton County Board of Supervisors signed off on bid advertisements for construction of a sewer line extension on state highways 30 and 30A. And Johnstown Mayor Amy Praught isn’t happy about it. "It's not a done deal," said Praught. "I know the county likes to push their agenda and seem like it’s a done deal, but we haven't even negotiated." The city of Johnstown in August 2022 signed a letter of intent with the county, laying out the blueprint of a potential sewer deal down the road. Praught said Johnstown was sent a contract on…
