Gloversville, Johnstown officials explore trailway alternative to NY-334 bridge demolition

GLOVERSVILLE — The feasibility of breathing new life into a controversial railroad bridge over state Highway 334 is an open question. A local corporate board is exploring the practicability of converting the structure into an extension of the Fonda, Johnstown and Gloversville Railroad trailway, linking the existing Fulton County path to the state trail system. Although the trestle bridge is situated near Fonda village, the property is owned by Fulton Railroad Properties Inc. MOHAWK — Distant stakeholders could soon seal the future of a hazardous railroad bridge in Montgomery County. City officials in Gloversville and Johnstown are expected to give state Department of Transportation officials the OK to tear down an old trestle bridge hovering above state Highway 334 near Fonda village within the next week. Both cities in 1991 formed a corporate board composed of three respective city lawmakers to co-manage a stretch of the FJ&G railroad, which includes the bridge.
