As many states across the nation are moving to pass discriminatory laws targeting transgender people, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed into law a bill that declares New York a “safe haven” for the trans community.The new law ensures the state will protect trans youth, their parents and their doctors and bars courts from enforcing out-of-state laws that would allow children to be removed from their parents’ custody for seeking gender-affirming care, such as puberty blockers or hormone therapy. Hochul signed that bill and four others on Sunday ahead of the New York City Pride Parade.
