Following the state’s actions to switch to unsupervised swimming at most beaches while lowering the age requirement for lifeguards, some local officials are concerned about the safety costs at its crowded beaches. The state Department of Environmental Conservation last Thursday announced it will transition to unsupervised swimming at most beaches in the Adirondacks and Catskill campgrounds. The switch excludes Lake George’s “Million Dollar Beach” and Hinckley Reservoir day-use areas. The move comes amid a national shortage of lifeguards. In an effort to address the issue last year, Gov.
