Amsterdam to issue $2.3M bond to demolish Five Corners strip mall, cost to be recouped from grants

AMSTERDAM — The Amsterdam Common Council has authorized $2.3 million in bonds to get the upfront financing in place to demolish the abandoned strip mall at the Five Corners intersection.Anticipated demolition costs and the removal of debris are expected to be fully covered by a $2 million Restore New York Communities Initiative grant and a $300,000 grant from National Grid previously awarded to the city.The bonding approved by the council on Tuesday will provide the city the initial funding needed to advance plans to raze the derelict former strip mall between Fourth and Forest avenues, just off Church Street.The city must…
