Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday that Blake Washington will be the next state budget director. Washington has worked as a budget advisor in the state Assembly for more than 20 years and previously served as the chamber’s director of budget studies and legislative budget analyst. In late February, Robert Megna took a leave as president of the Rockefeller Institute of Government in order to stepped back into the role. He previously served in the role under the Cuomo and Paterson administrations. Megna replaced Sandra Beattie. In response to the defense spending bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, state Assemblyman Phil Steck is introducing legislation that aims to protect abortion services for New York service members. The Republican-led House on Friday passed a defense bill last Friday, 219-210, that included an amendment that would rescind the Pentagon’s program for reimbursing service members who must travel to obtain reproductive health care and would also end diversity initiatives in the military. After nearly 10 years of sponsoring the legislation, state Sen. James Tedisco, R-Glenville, is celebrating the passage of a bill that would allocate a certain percentage of the state Legislature’s annual paid legislative internship program for veterans. Tedisco first introduced the legislation in 2014 to create the so-called Veterans Internship Program — or VIP.
