BROADALBIN — Within moments, John Lawrence grabbed a garden hose on Sunday night and started spraying down a stove aflame in his neighbor's Broadalbin house.  He stood around the doorway at 117 Benedict Loop for about 10 minutes before fire crews arrived.  "If he didn't do that, it would've been gone," said Rachel Kasierski, one of the occupants who wasn't home at the time. A fry pot caught aflame around 7:10 p.m. while Kasierski's son Will was away from the stove. Following the state’s actions to switch to unsupervised swimming at most beaches while lowering the age requirement for lifeguards, some local officials are concerned about the safety costs at its crowded beaches. The state Department of Environmental Conservation last Thursday announced it will transition to unsupervised swimming at most beaches in the Adirondacks and Catskill campgrounds. The switch excludes Lake George’s “Million Dollar Beach” and Hinckley Reservoir day-use areas.  The move comes amid a national shortage of lifeguards.
