Spears seeks order against ex-manager
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles judge is set to consider whether to extend a temporary restraining order taken out in the name of Britney Spears against her former manager.
Today’s hearing on the restraining order against Sam Lutfi is a resumption of one that began on May 28, with lawyers for Spears intending to show that tweets and texts from Lutfi to Spears and her family are doing her emotional damage.
When the last hearing ended, Spears’ father Jamie Spears, who runs her affairs through a court-ordered conservatorship, was testifying, and is scheduled to resume today.
The hearing is closed to the media and public. Britney Spears is not expected to appear.
Lutfi argues that he hasn’t contacted Spears in a decade and the order violates his constitutional rights.
Prosecutor won’t seek renewal of job
NEW YORK (AP) — Fallout from the Netflix miniseries that dramatizes the events surrounding the Central Park Five trial continues.
The New York Post reports that Elizabeth Lederer informed Columbia Law School on Wednesday that she would not seek reappointment as a part-time lecturer due to negative publicity generated by the series, “When They See Us.”
Lederer was the lead prosecutor in the case in which five teenagers were wrongfully convicted in the 1989 rape and beating of a woman jogging in Central Park.
The law school dean says in a letter the miniseries “reignited a painful — and vital — national conversation about race, identity, and criminal justice.”
Lederer’s move comes after Linda Fairstein, who headed Manhattan’s sex crimes unit at the time, was dropped by her publisher. Fairstein has said the series was full of falsehoods — a charge the director dismissed.
‘Midnight Cowboy’ actress Miles dies
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sylvia Miles, whose brief appearances in the films “Midnight Cowboy” and “Farewell, My Lovely” earned her two Academy Award nominations, has died.
Friend Mauricio Padilha says Miles died Wednesday in an ambulance in New York. The cause is not yet clear. Accounts of her age vary widely, from 86 to 94.
Miles was onscreen for about six minutes of 1969’s “Midnight Cowboy,” playing a woman who invites a male prostitute played by Jon Voight up to her penthouse for sex. Her role in the 1975 detective film “Farewell, My Lovely” was just a few minutes longer.
But each part saw her nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar.
Miles was also a scene-stealing character of the New York party scene, beloved for her outgoing personality and flamboyant fashion sense.
